A musical scale is a group of notes with defined intervals in between them. A scale can consist of any group of notes; however, some scales are more commonly used in Western music. There are two types of steps in a musical scale—a whole step and a half step. A half step is one interval between notes.

A whole step is equivalent to two half steps, so it is two intervals between notes.
