The Different Types Of Mold
Molds are very small microscopic organisms that produce spores as a form of reproduction, much like dandelions. They thrive in places where there is moisture and food for them. The mold spores of many different types of mold are floating in the air this very minute.
When these mold spores land in an area of optimum conditions, these spores grow into mold colonies that can stay in hiding for many years. Most types of mold colonies stay under floors or in between walls and ceilings and flourish. They can eat through organic material in slowly but surely. Other mold colonies grow on exposed food and other damp areas that have the right conditions.
Different Types Of Mold
The more common types of mold found in homes are Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Alternaria and Mucor. These are types of mold that are not particularly toxic but it is still better to avoid touching them it takes lab tests to determine what kind they are. Even inhalation of the more toxic types of mold can be lethal as the spores themselves may contain mycotoxin.
The types of mold that are toxic fall under Stachybotrys and Memnoniella. These molds produce mycotoxin which is lethal to animals and humans. These mycotoxins are usually not biodegradable which makes them impervious to heat and cold. They can stay in food or other matter for a long time. There are cases where the livestock are the carriers of the mycotoxins ad as they are slaughtered, the meat contain the toxins as well.
Getting Rid of Mold
Getting rid of all types of mold should be done by professionals, especially if the extent of the mold damage is extensive and deep in to the house or building. Most mold damage seep into wood and the wood will need to be replaced as these may contain traces of the fungus. Although, not all types of mold are toxic, it is better to hire professional mold removers.
If you wish to do your own mold removal, especially if the spot is small and manageable, you can mix 1 cup of beach to 1 gallon of water with a dash of detergent. The bleach can ultimately kill the mold but the ones that may have seeped into the wood will need cutting or replacing. Always wear protective gear when trying to do your own mold removal and make sure the area is well ventilated before starting the removal. Protective gear means gloves and a mask to avoid inhalation.
